WHAT IS CHANGE12 Inc.?
Change12 is a non-profit organization based in Canada that focuses on empowering people to recognize their potential to change their world by working collaboratively to achieve excellence both locally and globally. The organization is a grassroots initiative founded by it’s Executive Director Saeed Selvam at the age of 17 and 11 other students whom he assembled in a room to discuss what was to be done (if anything) about pressing global issues. The group then federally incorporated itself and recruited a board of directors while designing innovative and original projects based on extensive research from the social movements of the past such as the Independence Movement in India and the Civil Rights movements in the United States. The projects would focus on mobilizing and motivating individuals who were NOT socially involved, as Selvam knew that the key to social change lied in every human being’s want for a better world. The organization then carried out projects in their communities that gave young people a voice on particular issues and helped them gain a new confidence in themselves.
By inspiring everyday individuals to get involved and to start caring about major global issues, Change12 aims to create active citizens who will then inspire others to make a difference in their world. The idea is to engage, assist and empower through inspiration. By educating and creating awareness, the group has created a tactical “theory of change” and formula by which to carry it out. The strategy is to change an apathetic culture in the same way that culture setters (media sector, corporate sector) socially construct societal mindsets, by working together with NGO’s and the three aforementioned sectors for the greater good of mankind.
SAMPLE PROJECTS
Project One Mic-Presidential Skills Seminar: A bi-weekly training seminar in what is called “the second greatest fear known to man, besides death,” public speaking! C12 will empower youth in the seminar through enthusiastic and engaging lectures and provide a hands-on approach to public speaking, which in turn, provides for young people to have their voices heard, efficiently and confidently. Not to mention the other interpersonal skills they will learn including leadership and effective advocacy towards changing society.
C12 Ladies Group: C12 Ladies are a group of dynamic young women seeking to redefine what it means to be a lady in today's society. Focusing on some of the most pressing issues women have faced from early history along with today's issues around what it means to be "sexy." The C12 Ladies group aims to create a sisterhood of empowered women who begin a grassroots movement for social change under the Change12 framework. It's about power, family, men, life, sex and expectations and they’re meeting to discuss and break down barriers in a unique way, and truly understand the power of a woman.
